    Caddisfly fishing glossary

An order of aquatic insects (Trichoptera) that are a primary food source for trout.

Caddisflies are tent-winged insects that go through complete metamorphosis: larva → pupa → adult. Unlike mayflies, caddis adults can live for weeks and are strong fliers. They're found in nearly every trout stream.

    Life Stages to Imitate

    • Larva: Often in cases made of sticks/pebbles. Imitate with beadhead patterns.
    • Pupa: The most vulnerable stage. Soft hackles and swing flies work well.
    • Adult: Elk Hair Caddis is the classic dry fly pattern.
