    Dragfly fishing glossary

Unnatural movement of a fly caused by current pulling on the line or leader.

Drag occurs when the fly line or leader creates tension that pulls the fly across the current at a speed different from the natural drift. Fish — especially educated trout — are extremely sensitive to drag.

    Types of Drag

    • Visible drag: You can see a wake behind the fly
    • Micro-drag: Subtle, invisible drag that still spooks fish

    How to Fix It

Mending, reach casts, slack-line casts, and shorter drifts all help eliminate drag.
