    Emergerfly fishing glossary

An aquatic insect transitioning from nymph to adult at or just below the water surface.

The emerger stage is when a nymph rises to the surface and sheds its exoskeleton to become a winged adult. This transition makes insects extremely vulnerable, and trout feed heavily on emergers — often more than on fully hatched adults.

    How to Spot Emerger Feeding

Look for subsurface boils and subtle head-and-tail rises rather than splashy takes. Fish eating emergers often show their backs or dorsal fins without breaking the surface cleanly.
