    Hatchfly fishing glossary

A period when aquatic insects emerge from the water in large numbers, triggering fish feeding activity.

A hatch is one of the most exciting events in fly fishing. When insects emerge simultaneously, trout shift into active, surface-oriented feeding — creating prime dry fly conditions.

    Major Hatch Categories

    • Mayflies: BWOs, PMDs, Green Drakes, Tricos
    • Caddisflies: Mother's Day Caddis, October Caddis
    • Stoneflies: Salmonflies, Golden Stones
    • Midges: Year-round, especially important in winter

Timing hatches correctly is one of the most rewarding skills in fly fishing.
