    Indicatorfly fishing glossary

A buoyant device attached to the leader to detect strikes when nymphing.

Strike indicators serve the same function as a bobber in conventional fishing — they signal when a fish takes the submerged fly. Modern indicators come in many forms.

    Types

    • Yarn: Sensitive, adjustable, casts well
    • Thingamabobber: Buoyant plastic ball, great for heavy rigs
    • Putty: Adjustable, minimal splash on landing
    • Dry fly: Using a buoyant dry as your indicator (dry-dropper rig)
