    Mendfly fishing glossary

Repositioning the fly line on the water after casting to control drift speed and reduce drag.

Mending is the act of flipping or lifting the fly line upstream (or downstream) after it lands to counteract current drag. It's one of the most important skills for achieving a natural dead drift.

    Types of Mends

    • Upstream mend: Slows the fly in fast current — the most common
    • Downstream mend: Speeds up the fly in slow current
    • Stack mend: Multiple upstream mends for long drifts
    • Reach mend: Done during the cast for an immediate mend on landing
