    Risefly fishing glossary

The visible disturbance on the water surface when a fish feeds on or near the surface.

Reading rise forms is a critical skill for dry fly fishing. Different rise types indicate what the fish is eating and how to present your fly.

    Rise Forms

    • Sip: Gentle dimple — fish eating spent spinners or emergers in film
    • Head-and-tail: Back and dorsal fin visible — eating emergers just below surface
    • Splashy: Aggressive take — often caddis or fast-moving prey
    • Porpoise: Rolling rise — large flies like Green Drakes or stoneflies
