Streamerfly fishing glossary
A large fly pattern that imitates baitfish, leeches, or crayfish, typically fished with an active retrieve.
Streamers are the "big game" of fly fishing. They target the predatory instinct of large fish and can produce trophy-sized catches when other methods fail.
Techniques
- Stripping: Short, sharp pulls to imitate fleeing baitfish
- Swinging: Cast across current and let the fly sweep downstream
- Jigging: Lift and drop for a wounded baitfish action
When to Fish Streamers
Low light (dawn/dusk), high/off-color water, pre-spawn aggression, and winter when insects are scarce.
